Dear Friends of Poetry,
The Poetry Night Reading Series is excited to feature Jabez Churchill and Katy Brown at 7 PM on Thursday, March 17th, 2022 on the roof of the John Natsoulas Gallery, 521 1st Street in Davis.
Jabez W. Churchill is a poet, educator, activist, and the Poet Laureate Emeritus of Ukiah, California. Educated in California and Argentina, Churchill teaches Spanish at Santa Rosa Junior College and Mendocino College. Churchill has been an activist since the 1960s, a published poet since the 1970s, and a California poet in the public schools since the 1990s. Churchill is a member of the Ina Coolbrith Poetry Circle.
The author of two full-length books of poetry, Churchill has seen his work published widely, including in Poetry of Resistance: Voices for Social Justice, a collection of poetry in response to Arizona’s SB 1070 organized by City of Davis hero Francisco X. Alarcón.
Opening for Churchill will be Davis poet and photographer Katy Brown. Brown’s work has appeared often in Medusa’s Kitchen and Convergence. Rattlesnake Press produced The Quality of Light, a chapbook of her photographs and poems. Brown has won awards in The Ina Coolbrith Circle, Berkeley Poets’ Dinner, California Federation of Chaparral Poets, and The International Dance Poetry competitions; and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Katy Brown’s photographs can be found on the covers of the beloved Allegra Silberstein books Entering and West of Angels.
This event will take place on the roof of the Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street) at 7 PM on Thursday, March 17th. Dress warmly for this sunset event. There will be an open mic after the featured performers. Open mic performances will be limited to four minutes or two items, whichever is shorter.
