Local Best-Selling Memoirist Janelle Hanchett will read at Poetry Night in Davis on May 17th!

The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to feature notable Yolo County author and UC Davis alumna Janelle Hanchett. She will perform on Thursday, May 17th at 8 P.M. at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1stStreet in Davis.

Janelle Hanchett created the website “Renegade Mothering” in 2011 because she needed to know if the rest of the mothering world was crazy, or if she was. Writing after her kids went to bed and while she was supposed to be working, Janelle attracted an audience of hundreds of thousands of readers. She holds a BA in English from UC Davis and an MA in English literature from Sacramento State University. She lives in northern California with her four children and husband, Mac, who thinks “getting dressed up” means shaving his forearm tattoo.

Hanchett has also recently published a new memoir, Im Just Happy to Be Here. Like her irreverent, hilarious, and unflinchingly honest blog, “Renegade Mothering,” Hanchett’s memoir speaks with warmth and wit to those who feel like outsiders in parenthood and life–calling out the rhetoric surrounding “the sanctity of motherhood”as tired and empty, boldly recounting instead how one grows to accept an imperfect self within an imperfect life–thinking, with great and final relief, “Well, I’ll be damned, I’m just happy to be here.”

To find out what everyday readers feel about I’m Just Happy to Be Here, check out the more than 100 mostly five-star reviews published since May 1ston Amazon.com. Copies of Hanchett’s book will be available for sale and for signing at the John Natsoulas Gallery.

Guests are invited to arrive to Poetry Night early (by 7:45) to sign up for a spot on the open mic that will follow the readings by our featured author. The open mic list is usually full by 8 PM. Please bring your poems, short stories, monologues, and songs. Performers with instruments are especially welcomed. Participants will be asked to limit their performances to five minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. The Poetry Night Reading Series is hosted by Davis poet laureate Dr. Andy Jones, and is supported by Musical Director Timothy Nutter, and Dr. Andy’spremium interns.

“Writing is an act of reclamation and revolution. It is a dance with power.” Rae Gouirand
