Poets Jeff Knorr and Stanley Zumbiel will read in Davis on May 3rd!

The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to feature two notable Sacramento poets: Jeff Knorr and Stanley Zumbiel. They will perform on Thursday, May 3rd at 8 P.M. at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1stStreet in Davis.

Jeff Knorr is the author of the three books of poetry, The Third Body, Keeper,and Standing Up to the Day.His other works include Mooring Against the Tide: Writing Poetry and Fiction the anthology, A Writer’s Country and The River Sings: An Introduction to Poetry. His poetry and essays have appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies including Chelsea, Connecticut Review, The Journal, North American Review, Red Rock Review, Barrow Street, and Like Thunder: Poets Respond to Violence in America. Knorr has been a visiting writer for many conferences and festivals, as well as the founding co-editor of the Clackamas Literary Review. Currently he directs the River City Writer’s Series at Sacramento City College, having served as the Chair of the English department and on the Sacramento County Office of Education Arts Advisor Board. Jeff Knorr was the poet laureate of Sacramento from 2012 to 2017.

Reading with Jeff Knorr will be Stanley Zumbiel. The author of the 2016 poetry book Standing Watch, Stan Zumbiel taught English in middle and high school for thirty-five years and has had a hand in raising four children. He wrote his first poem in 1967 while serving in the Navy. His poems have appeared in Poet News, Nimrod, The Suisun Valley Review, Primal Urge, Off Channel, Medusas Kitchen, Convergenceand the Sacramento Anthology Late Peaches.In 2008, he earned his MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. He continues to write in his Fair Oaks home that he shares with Lynn, his wife of twenty-nine years.

Guests are invited to arrive to Poetry Night early (by 7:45) to sign up for a spot on the open mic that will follow the readings by our featured poets. Please bring your poems, short stories, monologues, and songs. Performers with instruments are especially welcomed. Participants will be asked to limit their performances to five minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. The Poetry Night Reading Series is hosted by Davis poet laureate Dr. Andy Jones, and is supported by Musical Director Timothy Nutter, and Dr. Andy’shard-working interns.

Future featured performers include renegade mother Janelle Hanchett on May 17th, Margaret Ronda, Nick LeForce, William Daly, Valerie Wallace, Chris Erickson, Julia Levine, and many others.
