Josh Fernandez and Jodi Angel Read on September 17 in Davis!

Fernandez and Angel

Dear Friends of Poetry,

Poetry Night is upon us once again, with two headliners at the John Natsoulas Gallery on September 17th: poet Joshua Fernandez and fiction writer Jodi Angel.

Josh Fernandez is a poet, journalist, and essayist. His full-length collection of poems Spare Parts and Dismemberment was published by R.L. Crow in 2011. He has written for Spin Magazine and the Sacramento Bee and he is a frequent contributor to the punk satire website The Hard Times. His poems, creative nonfiction and short stories have been widely published. Fernandez currently lives in Sacramento, Calif. where he teaches English at Folsom Lake College and works furiously on his first novel Stickup Kid.

Speaking of Spare Parts and Dismemberment, José Montoya has said, “Fernandez tells us what it is to be young, flipping tortillas and wanting more. In the tradition of Huck Finn, he is very much an Americano storyteller, a storyteller whose poems I treasure.”

Jodi Angel’s first collection of short stories, The History of Vegas, was published in 2005 and was named as a San Francisco Chronicle “Best Book of 2005” as well as a Los Angeles Times Book Review “Discovery.” Her work has appeared in Tin House, Zoetrope: All-Story, and the Sycamore Review, among other publications and anthologies. Her stories have received several Pushcart Prize nominations and she was selected for Special Mention in 2007. Her story, “A Good Deuce,” was noted as a “Distinguished Story” in The Best American Stories 2012, and her story, “Snuff,” was selected for inclusion in The Best American Mystery Stories 2014. Jodi Angel lives in Northern California with her wife and daughters.

About her most recent book Dorothy Allison has written, “Jodi Angel writes like an angel—in the full sense of the designation–which is to say someone fallen out of the armpit of a restless deity—sharp-eyed, ruthless, and tender at the same time. I’d walk a long way to hear her read these stories, and plan to buy a half dozen copies just so I can give them away saying, ‘Look at this. You have never before read anything like this.'”
Please join us September 17th at 8 PM at the Natsoulas Gallery in Davis.

Best,

Andy Jones
