Christian Kiefer and Janis Cooke Newman Read in Davis on October 1!

Kiefer and Newman

October is fast upon us, and talented writers are coming to Davis! The Poetry Night Reading Series is pleased to present two headliners at the John Natsoulas Gallery on October 1st: Christian Kiefer and, from San Francisco, Janis Cooke Newman.

A noted musician, recording artist, essayist and poet as well as a novelist, Christian Kiefer has been widely and favorably reviewed. Kiefer earned his Ph.D. in American literature from the University of California, Davis, and is on the English faculty of American River College in Sacramento. He lives in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California with his wife and five sons. He is the author of a book of poems titled Feeding Into Winter, and the novels The Infinite Tides, and, in 2015 The Animals.

Publisher’s Weekly called The Infinite Tides “An astute, impressive, and ambitious debut,” While Pam Houston wrote, “The Infinite Tides is the most emotionally and syntactically sophisticated debut I have seen, possibly ever.” An Amazon Best Book of the Month for March 2015, The Animals was cited in this way by Richard Ford: “A rare young stylist, with an abundance of vivid, engrossing stories in his brain; Christian Kiefer is a genuine find.”

Janis Cooke Newman is known for her memoir, The Russian Word for Snow, and her novels, Mary: Mrs. A. Lincoln, and, in 2015, A Master Plan for Rescue. She lives in San Francisco and is a long-time member of the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto and The Castro Writers Coop, a board member of Litquake, and the founder of the Lit Camp Writers’ Conference.

About Newman’s work, The San Francisco Chronicle has written, “Unforgettable… A Master Plan for Rescue balances beautifully on the thin line between wishful thinking and reason, between the imagination and the intellect. In this elaborate tale of appearances and disappearances, Newman employs not only the language of photography but also code-o-graphs, literal and metaphoric…The cumulative effect is wondrous. Like magic.”
