Dear Friends of Poetry,
Our March 6th, Poetry Night will feature local poets Cindy Juyoung Ok, Jade Meshew and Roy Magat. We meet at 7 PM at the John Natsoulas Gallery, 521 1st Street in Davis, and we hope you can join us!
Cindy Juyoung Ok is the author of Ward Toward, winner of the 2023 Yale Younger Poets Prize, and the translator of The Hell of That Star by Kim Hyesoon from the Wesleyan Poetry Series. A 2024 winner of a Forward Prize, the Gulf Coast Prize in Translation, and the Lucille Medwick Memorial Award, Ok is a former high school physics teacher and current assistant professor, and the newest hire, in the UC Davis MFA Program.
Opening for Ok will be Jade Meshew and Roy Magat, graduate students in the UC Davis MFA program. Raised in the Bay Area, Roy Magat is currently a second-year MFA Candidate in Creative Writing at UC Davis. His work has appeared in Everything Matters, and he is part of the editorial staff for the literary magazine Huizache. Jade Meshew is a first-year MFA student and a Northern California native. In 2024, she won the Pamela Maus poetry prize. Her work explores themes across identity and personhood, love and loss, and relationships with the natural world. Her current interests include ecopoetics and the potential of the persona poem.
The open mic tonight starts at 8. Performers will be asked to limit what they share to two items or four minutes, whichever is shorter. The open mic list is typically full by 6:45. People who show up early to help set up chairs will always earn a spot on the open mic list.
