Poetry Night in PERSON! Join us at 7 PM (not 8 PM) on Thursday, July 1st, 2021 at the John Natsoulas Gallery, 521 1stStreet in Davis.
Dear Friends of Poetry,
The high temperature Thursday afternoon will be a reasonable 91 degrees, which means that by the time Poetry Night starts at 7 PM (not 8 PM), the temperatures will have dipped into the temperate 80s. On Thursday, July 1st at 7 PM (new time!), we will assemble to enjoy some poetry by two remarkable poets: one local, and one visiting from Brooklyn, New York. Please join us Thursday at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis.
Thursday’s reading will feature poetry by Emily Hughes and Charles Halsted.
Emily Wallis Hughes is a poet and editor who grew up in Agua Caliente, California, a small town in the Sonoma Valley. Sugar Factory, her first full-length book of poems, containing a series of twelve new paintings by Sarah Riggs in collaboration with Emily’s poetry, was published in January 2019 by Spuyten Duyvil. Sugar Factory was a finalist for both the Fence Modern Poets Series Prize and the Tupelo Press Dorset Prize.
The poetry of Emily Hughes has been published in the Berkeley Poetry Review, Cordella, Elderly, Gigantic Magazine, Menage, Painted Bride Quarterly, Prelude, Suisun Valley Review, A Women’s Thing, ZAUM, and many other journals. An editor at Fence, she founded and edits Elecment, co-edits The Constant Critic, and directs distribution of Fence, the literary journal. She is currently an adjunct instructor at Rutgers–New Brunswick in New Jersey, where she teaches in the undergraduate Creative Writing Program.
Opening for Emily Hughes will be Charles Halsted. Charles is a retired academic physician from UC Davis, and an assiduous local poet. Charles recent wrote this: “I have two books published (Extenuating Circumstances and On Razor-Thin Tires), and two more on the launching pad. In other words, I have lots of new poems to be heard, most awaiting their debut.” We look forward to many months of newly-launched poems, including many Thursday night by Dr. Halsted.
The Poetry Night Reading Series, taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7 PM, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley, and by John Natsoulas and the staff at the John Natsoulas Gallery. Your host is Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis. See Dr. Andy’s new (free) weekly newsletter at https://andyjones.substack.com – Please subscribe!
This event will take place at the Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street) at 7 PM (note the time) on Thursday, July 1st. There will be an open mic after the featured performers. Open mic participants will be limited to four minutes or two items, whichever is shorter, so we can move on to the after-party.
Please join us on Thursday, July 1st, at 7 PM at 521 1st Street in Davis.
