Poetry Night via ZOOM! Join us at 8 PM on Thursday, May 6th, 2021.
Dear Friends of Poetry,
I hope you enjoyed spring, for it feels as if summer is upon us. If you feel that you didn’t enjoy enough poetry in April, May’s offerings are just as rich, as you will discover at our online poetry reading at 8 PM on Thursday, May 6th. To participate, visit https://ucdavisdss.zoom.us/my/andyojones at 8 PM, or a few minutes before if you wish to chat with the host and the other attendees.
This short (35ish-minute) reading will feature poetry by Katie Peterson, Jordan Dahlen, and Jake Rose. Please join us Thursday for the particular pleasures of poetry, or what Arnold Adoff calls “making music with words and space.”
Katie Peterson’s collections of poetry include This One Tree, Permission, The Accounts, winner of the 2014 Rilke Prize from the University of North Texas, and A Piece of Good News, a finalist for the Northern California Book Award. Her fifth book, Life in a Field, a collaboration with photographer Young Suh, was selected by Rachel Zucker for the 2020 Omnidawn Open Book Prize, and will be available in May 2021. Her work has been supported by fellowships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Radcliffe Institute, and Yaddo. This year, her poems have appeared in the Birmingham Poetry Review, Changes Review, Literary Imagination, and the New York Review of Books. She directs the MFA program in Creative Writing at UC Davis where she is Professor of English and a Chancellor’s Fellow.
Jordan Dahlen is a poet from the desert, now living and writing in Davis, CA. A Mellon Public Scholars Fellow, Jordan is currently completing his MFA in Creative Writing from UC Davis. When he’s not teaching, reading, or writing poems, he can be found with his family in the tree zoo near their home.
Jake Rose is a poet and second-year MFA student at the University of California, Davis. He shares a birthday with H.P Lovecraft and Demi Lovato.
Katie works tirelessly for her students and for the MFA program in Creative Writing at UC Davis. Join us to be reminded why she is so appreciated, and to help us fill a Zoom room.
The Poetry Night Reading Series, taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley, and those from many other locations via the magic of Zoom. Your host is Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis. See Dr. Andy’s (free) weekly newsletter at https://andyjones.substack.com – Please subscribe!
Please join us on Thursday, May 6th, at 8 PM via ZOOM!
