Dear Friends of Poetry,
On Thursday, November 19th, at 8 PM we will offer a poetry reading via ZOOM. To participate, visit https://ucdavisdss.zoom.us/my/andyojones at 8 PM, or a few minutes before if you wish to chat with the host and the other attendees.
This short (about 45 minutes) reading will feature poetry by Linda Collins, Mike Owens, Rick Rayburn, and Mary Eichbauer.
Originally from Washington, D.C., Linda Jackson Collins grew up in Maryland, Connecticut, and Kentucky before moving to California. She attended Vanderbilt University where she received a B.A. in English Literature and Business Administration, later earning an M.S. in Exercise Physiology at CSU Sacramento. Linda served on the Sacramento Poetry Center’s board and edited its poetry journal, Tule Review. She has benefited from participation in many local writing groups, especially those led by Jan Haag and Susan Kelly DeWitt. She lives in Carmichael, California.
Essayist, poet, and youth crime prevention advocate, Mike Owens is currently serving a Life Without Parole sentence in the California State Prison system under California’s mandatory minimum sentencing law. Mike lives in Mule Creek State Prison where he facilitates self-help groups and volunteers in a juvenile diversion program, working closely with at-risk youth. In 2016, Mike began working toward his degree in Behavioral Sciences from Coastline Community College, as well as a Counseling Certification from Folsom Lake College. For his poem “Black Settlement Photo: Circa 1867,” Mike won the 2010 PEN American Dawson Prize, and his writings have been featured in numerous collections and journals. Originally from the Sacramento region, Mike has been writing for nearly twenty years. He self-published Foreign Currency, a full-length poetry collection in 2012, and is currently working on an experimental memoir.
Rick Rayburn has journeyed from Pasadena to Humboldt Bay to Sacramento Valley, working as a redwood forest ecologist at the California Coastal Commission and a land preservationist at California State Parks. He has studied creative writing and poetry at Folsom Lake and American River Colleges. He is on the boards of the Santa Lucia Conservancy and the Center for Natural Lands Management. Rick has had poems published in Sacramento Voices, Poetry Now and Suisun Valley Review.
Born in New York City, Mary Eichbauer graduated in the first class of women at Caltech, where she majored in Literature. She later earned an M.A. and Ph. D. in Comparative Literature at UCLA and taught Humanities, English, and Women’s Studies. Her publications include Poetry’s Self-Portrait: The Visual Arts as Mirror and Muse in René Char and John Ashbery, a book of literary criticism; scholarly articles; program notes; poetry; and book reviews. Mary serves on several non-profit boards, and has been Editor-in-Chief of Benicia Literary Arts since 2014.
The Poetry Night Reading Series, taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis.
