A Poetry Reading with Brad Buchanan, Indigo Moor, and Rhony Bhopla

Dear Friends of Poetry,

On Thursday, October 15th, at 8 PM we will offer a poetry reading via ZOOM. To participate, visit https://ucdavisdss.zoom.us/my/andyojones at 8 PM, or a few minutes before if you wish to chat with the host and the other attendees.

This short (about 30 minutes) reading will feature poetry by Brad Buchanan, Indigo Moor, and Rhony Bhopla.

Brad Buchanan’s writings have appeared in nearly 200 journals, and he has also published three book-length collections of poetryThe Miracle Shirker (Poets Corner Press, 2005), Swimming the Mirror: Poems for My Daughter (Roan Press, 2008), and The Scars, Aligned: A Cancer Narrative (Finishing Line Press, 2019) as well as two academic books. 

Emeritus Professor of English at Sacramento State University, Brad Buchanan was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma in February 2015, and underwent a stem cell transplant in 2016, which involved a lengthy recovery and temporary vision loss. He is currently in remission.

Indigo Moor is the poet laureate emeritus of Sacramento. Indigo Moor’s fourth book of poetry Everybody’s Jonesin’ for Something, took second place in the University of Nebraska Press’ Backwater Prize and will be published in spring 2021. His second book, Through the Stonecutter’s Window, won Northwestern University Press’s Cave Canem prize. His first and third books, Tap-Rootand In the Room of Thirsts & Hungers, were both part of Main Street Rag’s Editor’s Select Poetry Series. Indigo is an adjunct professor at Dominican University and visiting faculty for Dominican’s MFA program, teaching poetry and short fiction. Indigo is a former faculty member at the Stonecoast MFA Program, where he graduated in 2012 with an MFA in poetry, fiction, and scriptwriting.

Rhony Bhopla is a poet and visual artist. She serves as a volunteer for the Sacramento Medical Reserve Corps, is a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and a member of the inaugural cohort of Rooted and Written⏤a series of writing workshops taught by People of Color for People of Color. Her art teachers include Susan Kelly-DeWitt and the nationally recognized artist and activist Milton Bowens. Rhony graduated from University of California, Davis with a degree in Biological Sciences with an Emphasis in Medical Microbiology, and a Minor in Comparative Literature. Rhony is a student in the Masters in Fine Arts in Writing Program with Pacific University.

The Poetry Night Reading Series, taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis.
