Poetry Night via ZOOM! Join us at 8 PM on Thursday, September 17
Dear Friends of Poetry,
On Thursday, September 17th, at 8 PM we will offer a poetry reading via ZOOM. To participate, visit https://ucdavisdss.zoom.us/my/andyojones at 8 PM, or a few minutes before if you wish to chat with the host and the other attendees.
This short (about 30 minutes) reading will feature poetry by Stephen Byrne and William O’Daly.
Stephen Byrne was born in north Dublin and now lives in Chicago. He won the RL Poetry Award, 2016 in the international category, and was a Finalist in the Poetry category of the 2018 “International Book Awards.” Recently nominated for a Pushcart Award, Byrne saw his poetry collection Somewhere but not Here published in 2017.
Byrne’s work has been translated into Russian for the Nasha Gazeta journal and newspaper, Dublin edition, and into Italian for Inkroci Magazine Italy. Byrne was runner up in the 2016 ‘Over the Edge’ poetry competition, he was also shortlisted for The Redline Book Festival Poetry Competition 2014 as well as shortlisted 2011/2016 and longlisted 2014 for ‘Over the Edge’ Poetry competition.
William O’Daly has translated eight books of the late-career and posthumous poetry of Chilean Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda, and most recently Neruda’s first volume, Book of Twilight, a finalist for the 2018 Northern California Book Award in Translation. All nine Neruda translations are published by Copper Canyon Press. O’Daly’s books of poems include The Whale in the Web, also published by Copper Canyon, as well as The Road to Isla Negra (2015), Water Ways (2017, a collaboration with JS Graustein), and Yarrow and Smoke(2018), the latter three published by Folded Word Press.
A National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, Bill O’Daly was a finalist for the 2006 Quill Award in Poetry. A four-time Pushcart Prize nominee, his poems, translations, essays, and reviews have been published in numerous journals and as part of multimedia exhibits and performances. He has received national and regional honors for literary editing and instructional design and has served on the national board of Poets Against War. Currently, he is Lead Writer for the California Water Plan.
The Poetry Night Reading Series, taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month, is generously supported by the John Natsoulas Gallery and by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis.
