Lanser Howard, Amanda Hawkins, and Penny Kline at Poetry Night – join us August 20th at 8PM via Zoom!

Dear Friends of Poetry,

On August 20th at 8 PM we will offer a poetry reading via ZOOM. To participate, visit https://ucdavisdss.zoom.us/my/andyojones at 8 PM, or a few minutes before if you wish to chat with the other attendees.

Tonight’s short event will feature Lanser Howard, Amanda Hawkins, and Penny Kline!

Lanser Howard began his career as a journalist and then transitioned into film where he wrote and produced an award-winning documentary film and other screenplays. He has recently published his first full-length book of poetry, The Screaming Silence. Howard’s visceral, minimalistic style paints hard-hitting portraits of the dark and lonely process of fighting through tragedy and loss and how to heal oneself with words, hope and an unwavering strength of self.

Amanda Hawkins holds a MA in theological studies from Regent College in Vancouver, Canada, and  begins the MFA at UC Davis in the fall. She is a Tin House and Bread Loaf Scholar, a three time Pushcart nominee, and the winner of the Editor’s Prize for Poetry at The Florida Review. Her writing can be found in Tin House, Tin House Online, Orion, and Terrain.

Penny Kline is the founding artistic director of Ovation Stage and has served as a longtime board member of the Sacramento Poetry Center. She is also an actor, a playwright and a poet. She was born in Sacramento and lived in Santa Monica, California and New Haven, Connecticut. She has had her own plays produced and has directed over 60 plays. Her poetry has been translated for the 100 Thousand Poets for Change inaugural World Conference she attended in Salerno, Italy in June 2015. Penny Kline is a creative force herself, and a constant encouragement to poets and creative professionals throughout the Sacramento Valley.

There is no cost to attend this poetry reading, though you are encouraged to support your local independent bookstore by buying books of poetry, and to support the California Community Foundation for Northern California Wildfire Relief with a donation. Your help is desperately needed.

The Poetry Night Reading Series, taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month, is generously supported by the John Natsoulas Gallery and by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis.

Please do join us at 8 on August 20th.

Dr. Andy
