Poetry Night via ZOOM! Join us at 8 PM on Thursday, May 21st
Dear Friends of Poetry,
On Thursday, May 21st, at 8 PM we will offer a poetry reading via ZOOM. To participate, visit https://ucdavisdss.zoom.us/my/andyojones at 8 PM, or a few minutes before if you wish to chat with the other attendees.
This short (about 35 minutes) poetry reading will feature three remarkable poets. There is no cost to attend. The three featured poets are Norma Liliana Valdez, León Salvatierra, and Francisco Aragón.
Norma Liliana Valdez is the author of the chapbook Preparing the Body (YesYes Books, 2019). A member of the Macondo Writers Workshop and a CantoMundo fellow, her work appears in The Rumpus, The Los Angeles Review, PANK Magazine, Tinderbox Poetry Journal, and the anthology Latinas: Struggles & Protests in 21st Century USA, among others. She is an alumna of the UC Berkeley Extension Writing Program and has been awarded residencies and fellowships from Hedgebrook, Under the Volcano International, Community of Writers, and VONA. León Salvatierra is the author of Al Norte. In 2014, he received a PhD in Hispanic Languages & Literatures from UC Berkeley. His poetry has been published in Poetry Magazine, the Notre Dame Review, and The Wandering Song. His Spanish translation of his poem “Teaching the Immigrant to Speak English” won the Juana Goergen Poetry Prize 2020 for the best poem in Spanish written in the United States. León is a second-year poet in the Creative Writing MFA program at UC Davis.
Francisco Aragón is the son of Nicaraguan immigrants. He is the author of three books, most recently After Rubén (2020). Previous collections include Puerta del Sol (2005) andGlow of Our Sweat. His most recent chapbook was His Tongue a Swath of Sky (2019). He is also the editor of The Wind Shifts: New Latino Poetry (2007). A native of San Francisco, CA and an alum of UC Davis’ graduate creative writing program (2000), he is a faculty fellow at the University of Notre Dame’s Institute for Latino Studies (ILS), where he directs Letras Latinas, the ILS’ literary initiative. The Poetry Night Reading Series, usually taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month, is generously supported by the John Natsoulas Gallery and by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis.
