The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to feature the iconic Sacramento poet Kathryn Hohlwein. She will be joined by her daughter, the author and prominent artist Laura Hohlwein, and by former Sacramento Poet Laureate Bob Stanley. They will perform on Thursday, January 16th at 8 P.M. at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street in Davis.

The author of many books, Kathryn Hohlwein graduated from the University of Utah, majoring in English and French, and received her M.A. from the Bread Loaf School of English, of Middlebury College, Vermont. After a year on scholarships to France, where she studied Philosophy at Rennes, Bretagne and Spanish at the University of Santander in Spain, she moved to Lebanon, where she taught Literature at the Beirut College for Women.

Kathryn Hohlwein has taught for 35 years at the English Departments of the following Colleges and Universities: Beirut College for Women; Drake University, Des Moines; Mount Mary College; University of Wisconsin; Ohio State University; American River Community College, Sacramento, and California State University, Sacramento. During her teaching career she has been awarded twice the Award for Meritorious Teaching and the “Woman of the Year Award,” Y.W.C.A. Her publications include many poems, book reviews, critical essays and lyrical essays in various journals. The Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library of American Women at Harvard has requested her papers and letters for its permanent archive.

Laura Hohlwein is a painter, poet and professor of Art and Creative Writing at The Art Institute of California – Sacramento. She holds an MFA in New Media from Transart Institute in Austria and an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College. Ms. Hohlwein was the recipient of two teaching grants from the California Arts Council for her work with prison inmates. Ms. Hohlwein also serves as Art Director for The Readers of Homer, a non-profit international literary event group that has produced audience-participation readings at The Library of Alexandria, The 92nd Street Y and The Getty Museum in Malibu. She has been a professional painter for twenty years and has exhibited in California, New Jersey, New York, Italy and France.

Bob Stanley is the former poet laureate of Sacramento and the author of Walt Whitman Orders a Cheeseburger and Miracle Shine, his first full length collection. Deceptively charismatic and endearing, Bob writes books, inspires readers, and plays a dangerous banjo.

Arrive early (by 7:40) to sign up for a spot on the open mic that will follow the readings by our featured poets. Please bring your poems, short stories, and songs. Performers with instruments are especially welcomed. Participants will be asked to limit their performances to four minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. The Poetry Night Reading Series is hosted by Davis poet laureate emeritus Dr. Andy Jones, and supported by Dr. Andy’s remarkable 2020 interns.
