Dear Friends of Poetry,
Please join us tonight for a special Poetry Night performance by author and entertainer Chris Erickson, one of my favorite regional wordsmiths.
Chris Erickson will perform on Thursday, December 19th at 8 P.M. at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street in Davis.
Chris Erickson is a novelist, performance artist, and first-rate storyteller. Originally from Decatur, Illinois, Erickson has delighted Sacramento Valley audiences for more than a decade. A Chris Erickson performance is sure to surprise and delight.
Erickson’s writing has appeared in The American Reader, Gigantic, Capilano Review, benmarcus.com, and The Hobo-Tramp Voice. Buzzfeed.com says of Erickson’s novella HENRYTOWN: “It would not be out of place on a Princeton syllabus.” Jonathon Sturgeon of Flavorwire.com says, “after reading Henrytown, I’ve come to appreciate that a younger crop of writers gets rural America, even if big publishing appears not to.” Rob Alexander of Brock University wrote these remarks in the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR LITERARY JOURNALISM STUDIES: “There is much fresh experimentation in these pages… Chris Erickson’s serialized ‘Henrytown,’ is strange enough that it warrants laudatory explication in the “Editor’s Epilogue” which conclude the issue in which it appears.”
Erickson is a graduate of the UC Davis creative writing program, and continues to live in Davis. He is the director of Peregrine Elementary School. For all these reasons, Chris Erickson has been chosen as the featured author for the last Poetry Night of the decade!
Word on the street is that phenomenal Sacramento poet, and outgoing (or outgone) Sacramento poet laureate Indigo Moor will be present this evening. Perhaps he will perform something at the open mic. Dr. Andy also plans to perform an original poem. Join us for the fun.
Arrive early (by 7:40) to sign up for a spot on the open mic that will follow the readings by our featured author. Please bring your poems, short stories, and songs. Performers with instruments are especially welcomed. Participants will be asked to limit their performances to five minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. The Poetry Night Reading Series is hosted by Davis poet laureate emeritus Dr. Andy Jones, and has been supported by Dr. Andy’s inimitable fall 2019 interns.
Thanks, and Happy Holidays,
Andy Jones
