Poetry Night on June 6th Features Brad Buchanan, along with Stuart Canton – join us at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis at 8 PM

Please join us for Sacramento Poetry Center President Stuart Canton and Sacramento State Professor, Emeritus Brad Buchanan at the Poetry Night Reading Series on Thursday, June 6th at 8 PM. We meet at the John Natsoulas Gallery, 521 1stStreet, in Davis.

Brad Buchanan’s writings have appeared in nearly 200 journals, and he has also published three book-length collections of poetry: The Miracle Shirker (Poets Corner Press, 2005), Swimming the Mirror: Poems for My Daughter (Roan Press, 2008), and The Scars, Aligned: A Cancer Narrative (Finishing Line Press, 2019) as well as two academic books.

Emeritus Professor of English at Sacramento State University, Brad Buchanan was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma in February 2015, and underwent a stem cell transplant in 2016, which involved a lengthy recovery and temporary vision loss. He is currently in remission.

Stuart Canton is the president of The Sacramento Poetry Center, and is Editor of their online publication, Poetry Now. He won a Bazzanella Award at Sacramento State where he became involved with surrealism and ecopoetics. He has been published locally in Brevities, The American River Review, and “WTF!?,” among others. His chapbook, A Field Guide For The Coming Extinction was recently published by Little M Press. He enjoys cooking almost as much as writing, and owns barely more literature than cookbooks.

Guests are invited to arrive to Poetry Night early (by 7:45) to sign up for a spot on the open mic that will follow the readings by our featured author and performers. The open mic list is usually full by 8 PM. Please bring your poems, short stories, monologues, and songs. Performers with instruments are especially welcomed. Participants will be asked to limit their performances to five minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. The Poetry Night Reading Series is hosted by Davis poet laureate emeritus, Dr. Andy Jones.

“Writing is an act of reclamation and revolution. It is a dance with power.” Rae Gouirand

Future Poetry Night performers include Indigo Moore (June 20th), Nebraska State Poet Matt Mason (July 5th– a Friday), Lisa Abraham, Lauren Frausto, and more. Please join us for a fun night of poetry every 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis.
