Three Sacramento-Area Poets Present “Poetry Overturned — Ladies of the Knight” at the Poetry Night Reading Series on Thursday, April 18that 8 PM at the John Natsoulas Gallery.
This event will feature poets Carol Lynn Stevenson Grellas, Jeanette Sem, and Angela James at The John Natsoulas Gallery, 521 1stStreet in Davis. With featured readers and an open mic, the Poetry Night Reading Series meets on the first and third Thursdays of every month.
Carol Lynn Stevenson Grellas is the author of six full-length collections of poetry and numerous chapbooks. Her 2012 chapbook, “Before I Go to Sleep,” won the Red Ochre Chapbook contest. Her work has appeared in The Yale Journal for Humanities in Medicine, Poets and Artists, Literature and the Arts, and War. Her books include On the Edge of the Ethereal, Breakfast in Winter andThings I Can’t Remember to Forget.
Grellas is the editor of the Orchards Poetry Journaland a member of Saratoga Authors Wall of Fame. In addition, she is a board member of the Sacramento Poetry Center. According to family lore, she is a descendant of Robert Louis Stevenson.
Jeanette Sem is a spoken-word poet and social activist who has taken her fiery brand of spoken word to the California Democratic Convention, competed with the Sac Unified Slam team, and won several slam contests. Her poetry can be heard on the background tracks of Truth Ali’s album “Resurrection: Season 1.” Her poems highlight awareness of social justice issues, locally and nationally.
Angela James is a poet and storyteller steeped in the oral tradition of her family in the Caribbean. Her eclectic presentations — mixtures of poetry, stories, music and motion — appeal to a wide range of audiences. Angela’s work has been published in the literary magazine Sussurussand in three collections: Personally, Random Pieces andWords.
The Angela James CD “Echo in the Bone” features several of her poetry pieces as well as her singing. She is a certified, multi-disciplined teaching artist and has received grants to promote poetry and storytelling in schools.
Guests are invited to arrive to Poetry Night early (by 7:45) to sign up for a spot on the open mic that will follow the readings by our featured authors. The open mic list is usually full by 8 PM. Please bring your poems, short stories, monologues, and songs. Performers with instruments are especially welcomed. Participants will be asked to limit their performances to five minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. The Poetry Night Reading Series is hosted by Davis poet laureate emeritus, Dr. Andy Jones.
