Davis Poet and Performance Artist Jackie Carroll will present his brand-new book Kubaba, published by a+bend press, at the May 2ndPoetry Night at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis.
Jackie Carroll has been, at various times, an opera singer, a truck driver, a nightclub entertainer, a rock star, an exotic dancer, a leading man, a leading lady, a server at Michelin-rated restaurants, and a clown. Jackie thrives on the connection between poet and audience. Kubaba is their first book of poetry.
The poems of Kubabacombine lyric, narrative, history, cosmology, and magical realism, and make new contributions to the lost histories of goddess lore.
The poetry performance will be introduced by author Jackie Carroll. The ensemble of performers will include Mimosa André, Lauren Frausto, Charlie Hilliard, Melissa Rae King, Penny Kline, and Jill Stengel. Music will be provided by Shawn King and Virginia Thigpen.
Beverages and light refreshments will be provided. Attendees will feel enticed to purchase a book.
Guests are invited to arrive to Poetry Night early (by 7:45) to sign up for a spot on the open mic that will follow the readings by our featured author and performers. The open mic list is usually full by 8 PM. Please bring your poems, short stories, monologues, and songs. Performers with instruments are especially welcomed. Participants will be asked to limit their performances to five minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. The Poetry Night Reading Series is hosted by Davis poet laureate emeritus, Dr. Andy Jones.
