William Greene and Lauren Swift

The Poetry Reading Series is proud to feature two outstanding poets: William Greene and Lauren Swift, both graduates of the UC Davis Graduate Creative Writing Program. Both will perform on Thursday, August 17th at 8 P.M. at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street in Davis.

William Greene is a writer, musician, teacher, and artist with deep roots in the deep South and shallow roots all over California. He is currently shopping his second novel and finishing up recording his third studio album of original songs. He graduated in 2016 from the UC Davis Creative Writing Program and has since been stridently avoiding full-time employment. Come see him sing and read and generally alarm you with his sterling prose and surprisingly competent singing voice.

Opening for Greene will be Lauren Swift. Lauren holds her MA from the Creative Writing program at the University of California, Davis. She is the recipient of the 2016 Elliot Gilbert Prize for Poetry and the 2016 Celeste Turner Wright Poetry Prize, co-sponsored by the Academy of American Poets. She has served as an editor for a variety of poetry publications, including Nameless Magazine and the Davis poetry anthology, Entering. She currently works as a content and marketing editor in Sacramento, and will be pursuing her MFA in Poetry at UC Irvine this fall.

An open mic will follow the readings by our featured poets. Please bring your poems, short stories, and songs. Participants will be asked to limit their performances to five minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. The Poetry Night Reading Series is hosted by Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate of Davis, and is made possible by his many interns, many of whom graduate in 2017 and will be missed.

There will be no Poetry Night on September 7th, the day that Dr. Andy and his wife Kate celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Make sure to join us every first and third Thursday in the October and beyond. Future readers include Lynn Freed and Joe Wenderoth.
