Please join us at 8 PM this Thursday, September 4th, at the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 First Street, Davis) for Poetry Night featuring the much-lauded poet Mary Mackey.
Her published works include seven collections of poetry, including Sugar Zone, winner of the 2012 PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award for Literary Excellence (Marsh Hawk Press 2011) and her latest collection Travelers With No Ticket Home (Marsh Hawk Press 2014). She is also the author of thirteen novels, including Immersion (Shameless Hussy Press 1972), which has just been re-published by the Authors Guild.
Mackey’s poems have been praised by Wendell Berry, Jane Hirshfield, Dennis Nurkse, Ron Hansen, Dennis Schmitz, and Marge Piercy for their beauty, precision, originality, and extraordinary range. Four times Garrison Keillor has featured her poetry on his program The Writer’s Almanac. Mackey’s works have been on The New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle bestseller lists, sold over a million and a half copies, and been translated into twelve foreign languages. She is past president of the West Coast branch of PEN, and a Fellow of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. A Professor Emerita at California State University, Sacramento, Mary Mackey earned a B.A. from Harvard and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Learn more about Mary Mackey, read her blog interview series People Who Make Books Happen, and sample her work at www.marymackey.com.
Opening for Mary Mackey will be Andrew Williamson. Williamson teaches writing at Sierra and American River College. He has an MA in literature, two cats, and a few new poems. After a brief stint in the polar midwest, has returned to the place of his birth, the central valley of California. He has a novel in the works, but claims that student essays wait for no man.
The open mic will begin at 9 PM, and the after-party at de Vere’s Irish Pub will start at 10 PM. You are encouraged to arrive early to secure a seat and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic List.
The Poetry Night Reading Series—coordinated and hosted by Dr. Andy Jones, the new Poet Laureate of the City of Davis— takes place at the John Natsoulas Gallery on the first and third Thursday of every month. Poetry Night at the John Natsoulas Gallery is an entirely volunteer-run affair.
