The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome poet and folk singer Lauren Norton and her band, The Souterrain, on Thursday, March 17th at 8 P.M. She will be performing at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street.
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Davis graduate student, Lauren Norton will be reading a selection of poems, stories, and short essays that take Ireland as their setting or subject. Musical accompaniment will be provided by her band, The Souterrain – a folk trio based in Davis.
Lauren is a poet in her second year of the UC Davis Master’s Program in Creative Writing. She is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and an Irish native. Growing up in County Wicklow, Lauren learned Sean Nós (old style) singing and fiddle playing with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann. During her years at Trinity, she toured Europe with The Dublin University Chapel Choir as a first soprano. Her poetry and essays have appeared in The Attic, Bray Arts Journal, and Galway University’s anthology of established and emerging writers, Ropes.
David Sachs, a junior English major and a member of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra will play double bass. Sam Shirley, a Dramatic Arts graduate of UC Davis, will exhibit his skills on guitar, ukulele, glockenspiel, and harmonica.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, produced by Brad Henderson and hosted by Andy Jones, occurs on the first Wednesday of the month at Bistro 33, and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery.
