Christian Kiefer and Michael Spurgeon Read at the John Natsoulas Gallery on January 20th at 8 P.M.

The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome poets Christian Kiefer and Michael Spurgeon, on Thursday, January 20 at 8 P.M. They will be performing at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street.

As a musician, Christian Kiefer has performed, collaborated, and recorded with some of the leading lights of the American independent rock and avant-garde sound communities and has been featured twice on NPR’s All Things Considered. As a poet, Kiefer has seen his work appear in Santa Monica Review, The Antioch Review, and Blackbird. He holds a Ph.D. in American Literature from University of California Davis and teaches English at American River College. The result of Kiefer’s collaboration on a triple CD, Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 43 U.S. Presidencies, has been used as a teaching aid in many American history classes. His new novel, The Infinite Tides, is making the rounds. Find out more about Christian Kiefer at http://xiankiefer.wordpress.com/.

With an MFA from the University of Arizona, Michael Spurgeon has authored two chapbooks of poetry, Valente’s Delicate Wrist and Prosthetic Breath & Other Poems. His poems have appeared in journals such as The North American Review, Sonora Review, The Packinghouse Review, and several others. He has lived and traveled extensively in Mexico and was residing in Chiapas during the 1994 Zapatista uprising. Set against the dramatic events of that conflict, his first novel, Compadres, is currently under consideration with several publishers. A tenured professor at American River College, Michael is the faculty adviser to the American River Review, the nation’s most highly acclaimed undergraduate literary and art magazine.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a table, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, organized by Andy Jones and hosted this week by Brad Henderson, occurs on the first Wednesday of the month at Bistro 33, and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery, both at 8 P.M., with an open microphone segment at 9 P.M.
