The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome poets Anara Guard and Bill Gainer on Thursday, December 16th at 8 P.M. They will be performing at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street.
Anara Guard’s poetry has been published in Typog, Touch II and Hika, and she has also published nonfiction on a variety of subjects. She studied writing at the Urban Gateways Young Writers Workshop of Chicago, the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts, and the Bread Loaf Writers Conference in fiction. The Sound of One Body is her first collection of fiction; the short stories within it have been described as “strong, haunting…like small wounds, nothing fatal, but nevertheless permanent; not scars but bruises won in battle, each one a glancing blow that leaves a distinct mark.”
Bill Gainer is known for the openness of his confessional poetry and is recognized as one of the founding contributors to the modern movement of “After Hours Poetry.” He has contributed to the literary scene as a writer, editor, promoter, publicist, publisher and poet. Gainer continues to read and work with a wide range of poets and writers, including readings on KUSF radio with Punk-Rocker Patti Smith and performances with California Poet Laureate, Al Young. Gainer is nationally published and is the editor of Nevada County’s “Pen Award” winning press, R.L. Crow Publications, which was recently recognized by the Sacramento News and Review as a “The Best of Sacramento” for its “Gorilla Poetry Project.”
Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a table, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, hosted by Andy Jones and produced by Brad Henderson, occurs on the first Wednesday of the month at Bistro 33, and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery, both at 8 P.M., with an open microphone segment at 9 P.M.
