The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome poet and essayist Sharon Doubiago to the Bistro 33 stage on Wednesday, December 1st at 8 P.M.
Born and raised in Southern California, Sharon Doubiago is a talented and prolific poet, an at-home countercultural mother, an anti-war activist and a Joycean scholar. She has published a number of important books, including Hard Country; South America Mi Hija, which she wrote after traveling to Machu Picchu, and which was named the Best Book of the Year by the LA Weekly; and The Book of Seeing with One’s Eyes, which won Gloria Steinem’s Woman Writer Award. Her poetry collections include Psyche Drives The Coast (for which she won The Oregon Book Award for Poetry) and Body and Soul (which includes her third Pushcart Prize winner). Love on the Streets, Selected and New Poems, was published by the University of Pittsburgh in November 2008. Her new collection of memoir stories, Why She Loved Him, is circulating.
In total Sharon Doubiago has won three Pushcart Prizes for poetry and fiction, The Hazel Hall Oregon Book Award for Poetry, the California Arts Council Fellowship Award, the Woman Writer Genius Award from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, the Diane Wood Middlebrook-Ann Sexton Memorial Fellowship in Literature at Djerassi, Sigma Delta Chi’s Sports News Reporting First Place Prize, Tom Robbins’ Journalist of the Year Award (“for the most outrageous, risk-taking, life-affirming article published in the Northwest”– the last two for “Son II”), and many other awards and prizes.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at Bistro 33 to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, hosted by Andy Jones and produced by Brad Henderson, occurs on the first Wednesday of the month at Bistro 33, and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery, both at 8 P.M., with an open microphone segment at 9 P.M.
