Julia Levine and Denise Platt Lichtig read on October 2nd in Davis

Please join us at 8 PM this Thursday, October 2nd, at the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 First Street, Davis) for Poetry Night featuring the poets Julia Levine and Denise Platt Lichtig.

 

Julia B. Levine has won numerous awards for her poetry, including the 2003 Tampa Review Prize for her collection, Ask, the 1998 Anhinga Poetry Prize and bronze medal from Foreword magazine for her first collection, Practicing for Heaven, as well as the Discovery/ Nation award. Her latest poetry collection, Small Disasters Seen in Sunlight, inaugurated the Barataria Poetry Series for Louisiana State University Press in 2014. She has work appearing in several new anthologies, including The Places That Inhabit Us, The Autumn House Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry, and The Bloomsbury Anthology of Contemporary Jewish American Poetry. Her work has been widely published in many of the most respected literary journals, including The Southern Review, Ploughshares, and Prairie Schooner. Julia Levine earned a PhD in clinical psychology from UC Berkeley, and today she lives and works in Davis, California.

 

Opening for Julia Levine will be Denise Platt Lichtig. A longtime Davis poet, Lichtig has been published in Hayden’s Ferry Review, The Suisun Review, The Antioch Review, and Dry Heat. A Pushcart Prize nominee, Lichtig was a finalist for the Atlanta Review International Poetry 2012 Contest, a semi-finalist in the Discovery /Nation Award, and the winner of the Quinton Duval Chapbook Contest, judged by Dennis Schmitz. A volunteer at REAL POETS, a non-profit organization that helps high-risk youth write poetry, Lichtig lives in Davis where she practices Chinese Medicine and owns a small Tai Chi school.

 

The open mic will begin at 9 PM, and the after-party at de Vere’s Irish Pub will start at 10 PM. You are encouraged to arrive early to secure a seat and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic List.

 

The Poetry Night Reading Series—coordinated and hosted by Dr. Andy Jones, the Poet Laureate of the City of Davis—takes place at the John Natsoulas Gallery on the first and third Thursday of every month. Poetry Night at the John Natsoulas Gallery is an entirely volunteer-run affair.
