<p>Lynn Freed is a South African writer and novelist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Ploughshares, Vogue, The Washington Post, Newsweek, The Atlantic Monthly, Tin House, and The New Yorker. She has been awarded the inaugural Katherine Anne Porter Award for Fiction by The American Academy of Arts and Letters, and has received grants from The National Endowment for the Arts, The Guggenheim Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation, among others.</p>
<p>Her short story “Sunshine” won the 2011 PEN/O. Henry Prize, the nation’s highest honor for short fiction, and her story “Ma: A Memoir” was performed on NPR’s Selected Shorts. Several of her novels, as well as her collection of stories, The Curse of the Appropriate Man, have appeared on The New York Times &#8220;Notable Books of the Year&#8221; list.</p>
<p>She lives in Northern California, and teaches at the University of California, Davis.</p>

<p>The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome Monterey Writer and Poet Patrice Vecchione. Vecchione will be reading from her latest book of poetry, <i>The Knot Untied,</i> on Thursday, May 2<sup>nd</sup> at 8:00 P.M. The reading will be held at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street.</p>
<p>In addition to <i>The Knot Untied, </i>Vecchione is the author of <i>Writing and the Spiritual Life: Finding Your Voice by Looking Within</i>, which the <i>San Francisco Chronicle</i> called  “refreshingly simple and thought-provoking.” Vecchione is also the editor of many anthologies, including <i>Truth and Lies, The Body Eclectic, Revenge and Forgiveness, </i>for and <i>Whisper and Shout: Poems to Memorize</i>. <i>A Woman&#8217;s Life in Pieces</i>, a one-woman play, was performed to full houses throughout the Monterey Bay Area.</p>
<p>Patrice Vecchione has taught poetry along California’s central coast for more than 25 years. Her visit to Davis on May 2<sup>nd</sup> is one in more than a dozen stops on a California book tour supporting <i>The Knot Untied.</i> We hope you will help us welcome this poet and author to Davis!</p>

<p>The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome Sacramento Poet Laureate Jeff Knorr on Thursday, April 18<sup>th</sup> at 8 P.M. He will be performing at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street.</p>
<p>Jeff Knorr is the Poet Laureate of Sacramento. Winner of the Ray Bradbury Award in Poetry, Knorr has authored three collections of poetry: <i>The Third Body, Standing Up to the Day, </i>and <i>Keeper</i>. Also a writer of textbooks, for Prentice Hall Knorr has co-authored and co-edited <i>Mooring Against the Tide: Writing Poetry and Fiction, A Writer&#8217;s Country, </i>and <i>The River Sings: An Introduction to Poetry</i>.</p>
<p>Jeff Knorr’s poetry and essays have appeared widely in literary journals and anthologies, and he has been an invited judge for various awards. He was the founding co-editor and poetry editor of the <i>Clackamas Literary Review</i>, which won Best New Magazine in America in 1997 and in 1998. A past Chair of the English Department at Sacramento City College, Knorr has also served on the Sacramento County Office of Education Arts Executive Advisory Board. He lives in Sacramento, California.</p>
<p>Jeff Knorr last read for the Poetry Night Reading Series in 2008. We hope you will help us welcome him back to Davis.</p>

<p> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Joe Wenderoth</span> is a Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of California, Davis. Wenderoth’s work is widely anthologized, appearing in collections such as <i>The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories, Poetry 180, The Next American Essay, </i>and <i>The Best American Prose Poems: From Poe to Present. </i>In 2003, the One Yellow Rabbit theater company performed an adaptation of Wenderoth’s experimental novel <i>Letters to Wendy’s</i>.</p>
<p>When asked for an updated bio for this event, Wenderoth shared the following: “Joe Wenderoth was cut out of porous rock in the rain while electricity surged. The result was incredible—what wonderful eyes! Then things slowly but surely got worse.”</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Oliver Jones</span> is a Staff Writer at <i>People Magazine</i>, where he primarily covers the film industry. Now also a Visiting Professor of Journalism at Emerson College, Jones has worked as a Staff Writer for <i>Variety</i> and <i>Us Weekly</i> magazines, and as a Freelance Writer for <i>Premiere</i> and <i>Details </i>magazines. Jones received his BA in Poetry and Media Studies from Hampshire College. Like James Merrill, Sylvia Plath, and Gjertrud Schnackenberg, Oliver Jones is a past winner of the Glasscock Poetry Prize, the oldest intercollegiate poetry prize in the United States.</p>
<p>Wenderoth and Jones will both be reading essays. Some of the topics and language explored may be objectionable to some listeners. If time, there will be a Q&amp;A after the main event. The Open Mic will begin at 9.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Dave Boles</span> has worked as an itinerant publisher, writer, and designer since 1981. Boles is the founder of such magazines as <i>Primal Urge</i>: <i>A Journal For Diverse Humans</i>, <i>The Sacramento Free Press, Cruisin’ Magazine, Foothill Focus, </i>and many more. His publications, editorials, writing and artwork have won numerous awards throughout his 30+ year publishing career, and he has published such noted writers as D.R. Wagner, A.D. Winans, and Ben Hiatt.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Meri St. Mary</span> was one of the original Hollywood scene punks, closely associated with the early Dickies and Weirdos, where she was known as Meri Housecoat. After relocating to San Francisco in the early 1980s, she formed Housecoat Project. Her poetry has most recently been published in <i>Chiron Review #9</i>, where she was featured on the cover, as well as <i>Primal Urge: A Journal For Diverse Humans </i>and <i>Out of Our, Vol. 7</i>. She has performed her poetry at many venues from Los Angeles to San Francisco to Nevada City, her current home base. <i>YOU TORE US</i> is her first collection of poetic and artistic works. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>The Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome Wendy Silk and the Science Singers, who will present &#8220;Earth Tones,&#8221; on Friday, March 15<sup>th</sup> at 8 P.M. 2013. They will be performing at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1<sup>st</sup> Street.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Wendy Silk and the Science Singers is a group formed as a result of the UC Davis arts and science fusion program which created the course “Science and Society 42: Earth, Water, Science, and Song.” The course is taught by scientist and Professor Wendy Silk. The class writes and performs a variety of different musical genres; everything from rap ballads to smooth acoustic guitar serenades. Their songs convey their understanding of the class material and include lyrics that communicate such topics as the scientific method, the hydrologic, carbon and nitrogen cycles, soil, groundwater, rivers, and spatial and temporal variation.</p>
<p>The Poetry Night Reading Series, organized and hosted by Andy Jones and produced by Rachel Riley, occurs on the first and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery.</p>

<p>D.R. Wagner is a visual artist, poet, and musician. He has had over thirty one-person exhibitions, and he has published over twenty books of poetry and letters. His most recent books include a chapbook entitled <i>Pentecost</i> (Green Panda Press) released in 2012, and <i>Personal Archeology</i> (Bottle of Smoke Press), set to premiere in 2013.</p>
<p>Wagner has been the recipient of many awards, including the Fibers West Award, and an award for Traditional Technique at the International Textile Competition, Kyoto ’87, Kyoto, Japan. Over the past thirty years he has been a prominent figure in the arts community; amongst his many titles, he is the special Consultant to the California Art Council in Technical Services, Director of the California State Art in Public Buildings Program for Office of the State Architect, and Director State of California Housing and Community Development Art Gallery.</p>
<p>The founder and former editor at Niagara Press and Runciple Spoons Press, Wagner has read with Jim Morrison of the Doors in a legendary reading with Morrison and Michael McClure, amongst many other poets. His visual poetry has been exhibited in venues ranging from The Musee de Arts Decoratifs, Paris, at the Louvre, to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>Wagner currently resides in Sacramento, CA, and works as a Lecturer in Design at the University of California, Davis, and as an artist-in-residence for the California Arts1 Council at Sacramento elementary schools.</p>
<p>Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. Edythe Haendel Schwartz is the author of A Palette of Leaves, Mayapple Press, 2012, and a chapbook, Exposure, Finishing Line Press, 2007. Her poems appear widely in journals and anthologies, including Calyx, Cave Wall, California Quarterly, PMS, Poetica, Natural Bridge, Earth’s Daughters, Poet Lore, Pearl, Persimmon Tree, Potomac Review, Hawaii Pacific Review, Vermont Literary Review, Cider Press Review, Runes, Spillway, Thema, and Water-Stone, among others.</p>
<p>In 2012, Schwartz’s poem “A Natural Phenomenon” won first prize in the Friends of Acadia Poetry Competition. Other awards include Poetry Finalist in Poets &amp;Writers 2012 California Writers Exchange Award for a group of 10 poems titled “Brushstrokes,” Persimmon Tree’s 2011 Western States Poetry Competition for her poem “Resist,” and the Anna Davidson Rosenberg Award for poems on the Jewish experience, for “Exposure.” In 2006 and 2008, Schwartz received writer’s grants for residencies at The Vermont Studio Center.</p>
<p>Edythe Haendel Schwartz will be introduced by former Sacramento Poet Laureate and current Sacramento Poetry Center President Bob Stanley.</p>

<p>Zara Raab is a poet, essayist, and editor currently living in Kensington, CA. Her published books include <i>Swimming the Eel</i> (David Robert Books, 2011) and <i>The Book of Gretel</i> (Finishing Line Press chapbook, 2010); her next book, <i>Rumpelstiltskin, or What’s in a Name? </i>will be published in 2014. Her poems, reviews, and essays appear in <i>Arts &amp; Letters</i>, <i>West Branch</i>, <i>The Evansville Review</i>, <i>River Styx</i>, <i>Crab Orchard Review</i>, <i>The Dark Horse</i>, and elsewhere. A graduate of Mills College and the University of Michigan, Raab currently teaches a poetry class at the Hillside Club in North Berkeley. <p>This week Poetry Night will feature performances of two sections from <a href="http://theatredance.ucdavis.edu/season/prod_details.aspx?p=49"><i>Ligilo</i></a><i>,</i> a choreography by UC Davis Master of Fine Arts candidate Jarrell lu-Hui Chua in collaboration with Bobby August, Jr. Chua has presented her work nationally and internationally, and is the artistic director and founder of the Raw Egg Collective, as well as the co-artistic director of Open Experiments Ensemble. Bobby August, Jr. is a UC Davis MFA acting candidate and the owner and director of the award-winning Made Up Theatre in Fremont which specializes in performing improvised plays.</p>

<div>Art Mantecón was born in Laredo, Texas and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Mantecón’s poetry and prose have appeared in several reviews and anthologies, and he has been featured at various poetry venues in Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Jose, and around the Bay Area. In 2011, his translation into English of selected p&#8230;oems of Spanish madman Leopoldo Maria Panero, titled <em>My Naked Brain</em>, was published by Swan Scythe Press. Translating Panero’s poetry had consumed him for several years. In a review of a Mantecón reading, Tim Kahl, of the Sacramento Poetry Center, called his a “power performance.”</div>

<div>Gilberto Rodriguez is a poet, playwright, musician, storyteller, and singer/ songwriter. He is the founder of musical group, Diluvio, as well as the theatre group, <em>Unheimlich</em>. His plays have been performed in Sacramento and at the Cayuga Vault in Santa Cruz. His production of <em>Antonin Artaud and his Doubles</em> premiered in Santa Cruz in the spring of 2009.</div>

<p>Davis Poet Laureate Eve West Bessier will perform a poem at the very start of this event.<br />
