			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Beginning its fifth year in the city of Davis, the Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome Rae Gouirand on Thursday, January 19<sup>th</sup> at 8 P.M. She will be performing at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1<sup>st</sup> Street.</p>

<p>Rae Gouirand’s poems and essays have appeared in <em>American Poetry Review, Boston Review, Columbia, The Kenyon Review: KROnline, Seneca Review, jubilat, Spinning Jenny, Bateau, Michigan Quarterly Review, Memoir (and)</em>, and two recent volumes of the Best New Poets series, &amp; were selected for Verse Daily‘s Best of 2010 list. Her first collection of poems, <em>Open Winter</em>, was a finalist for the National Poetry Series, the Four Way Books Levis Prize, the Fordham University Press Poets Out Loud Prize, Utah State University’s May Swenson Award, Ohio State University Press’ The Journal Award, CSU-Fresno’s Philip Levine Poetry Prize, the Crab Orchard Poetry Series, Persea Books’ Lexi Rudnitski Prize, the Barrow Street Press Book Prize, the Dream Horse Press Book Prize, and other awards before being selected this past July by Elaine Equi for the 2011 Bellday Prize for Poetry.</p>
<p>An alumna of the MFA program in creative writing at the University of Michigan, Rae is the winner of the Meijer Fellowship, the Hopwood Award, and fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and the Santa Fe Art Institute; a two-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize; and the recipient of a 2009 award from the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Foundation for outstanding work by emerging poets. She lives in Davis, California, teaches private workshops in poetry and creative nonfiction, and works the double shift as Education Programs Manager for Memoir Journal and Writer-in-Residence for the nation’s only conservancy-sponsored public arts program at Cache Creek Nature Preserve.</p>
<p>Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, organized and hosted by Andy Jones, occurs on the first and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery.</p>

<p>Melanie Madden earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in English at UC Davis, studying 20th Century American Literature. Winner of Gonzaga University’s Costello Poetry Award, Melanie has placed poems in Gonzaga’s literary annual, Reflection, and a short story, “Limited Visibility,” in the former UC Davis literary magazine, Seele, among other literary accomplishments. In 2011, Melanie finished a memoir, her first book-length project. This fall Melanie will begin work in an MFA program in creative nonfiction.</p>

<p>Raised in Florida and Turkey. Arielle Robbins received the Diana Lynn Bogart Prize for Fiction and a Tomales Bay Undergraduate Fellowship in 2010. Her poetry has been featured in <em>Poetically Correct</em>, a poetry anthology of young writers, and her poem, “Edits to My Mother’s Life” was a finalist in the 2010 Ina Coolbrith Poetry Contest. Currently, she is finishing her undergraduate studies in English with an emphasis in creative writing at UC Davis.</p>
<p>Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, organized and hosted by Andy Jones, occurs on the first and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery.</p>

<p>Joan Gelfand is an award-winning writer from San Francisco who has authored two books of poetry: <em>A Dreamer’s Guide to Cities and Streams</em> (San Francisco Bay Press, 2009) and <em>Seeking Center</em> (Two Bridges Press, 2006). Her poetry, fiction, reviews and essays have appeared in national and international magazines, anthologies and literary journals. Recipient of the 2010 Cervena Barva Award, Gelfand teaches in the California Poets in the Schools and Poetry Out Loud programs and frequently speaks at writing workshops and conferences, including every year with Dr. Andy Jones for many years at the San Francisco Writers Conference.</p>

<p>Jenny Holland has been a musician since the age of six, playing a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, flute, and percussion. She has travelled internationally, both as a student and as a professional musician. Her musical style is eclectic and spans across many different genres, including folk, various kinds of jazz, and rock. Currently, she is the music director of the Berkeley theater group Ragged Wing Ensemble, a private music teacher, and a member of the band Gods+Others.</p>

<p>Leonore Wilson received her B.A. and M.A. in English and Creative Writing at UC Davis, and has taught at various colleges in the Bay Area for over twenty years.  She has been the recipient of various grants and fellowships through Villa Montalvo Center for the Arts and the University of Utah. Her work has been featured in magazines as <em>California Quarterly, Quarterly West,</em><em> </em><em>Madison Review, Trivia: Voices of Feminism, Nimble Spirit,</em> and <em>Third</em><em> </em><em>Coast</em>. Her most recent book, <em>Winter Solstice,</em> was released this year. She resides in Napa with her family.</p>

<p>Susan Kolodny is a psychoanalyst who specializes in work with artists and writers. Her poetry has appeared in several magazines and anthologies, including the <em>New England Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Marlboro Review, </em> and <em> River Styx. </em>Her first poetry collection, <em>After the Firestorm,</em> has just been published by Mayapple Press.</p>
<p>Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, organized and hosted by Andy Jones,occurs on the first and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery.<br />

<p>Indigo Moor is an award-winning poet and the author two acclaimed books of poetry. His work has appeared in a number of anthologies and journals including the <em>Xavier Review</em>, <em>LA Review</em>, <em>Poetry Now</em>, and <em>Suisun Valley Review</em>.</p>
<p>His first book, <em>Tap Root, </em>was published in 2006 by <em>Main Street Rag’s</em> Editor’s Select Poetry Series. His most recent book of poetry, <em>Through the Stonecutter’s Window,</em> was the 2009 winner of the nationally recognized Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize and writing fellowship. He is also the recipient of numerous accolades including the 2005 Vesle Fenstermaker Poetry Prize for Emerging Writers and the 2008 Jack Kerouac Poetry Prize. He has been a finalist for numerous awards, such as the T.S. Eliot Prize, and in 2009 he was nominated for the Pushcart Prize.</p>
<p>Moor is a member of the <em>Artist’s Residency Institute </em>for teaching artists and leads workshops across the country. He is currently enrolled in the Stonecoast MFA program at the University of Southern Maine.</p>

<p>Joshua Clover is an award-winning poet, film and music critic, and theorist who has published multiple books. Clover received his B.A. from Boston University and is a graduate of the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshop. He has been a member of the UC Davis English Faculty since 2003.</p>
<p>His first book of poetry, <em>Madonna Anno</em><em> </em><em>Domini </em>(Louisiana State University Press, 1997) was honored with the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. His second book of poetry, <em>The Totality for Kids</em> (University of California Press) was published in 2006. He served as the distinguished Holloway poet-in-residence at the University of California, Berkeley and is a two-time recipient of the Pushcart Prize for his poetry. His poems have also appeared in three volumes of <em>Best American Poetry</em>.</p>
<p>His works on criticism include a book on film, <em>The Matrix </em>(British Film Institute, 2005) and <em>1989: Bob Dylan Didn&#8217;t Have This</em><em> </em><em>to Sing About</em> (University of California Press, 2009), which has been described as “a tour de force of lyrical theory.” He has written for <em>The New York Times</em>, is a regular contributor to <em>Village Voice,</em> and is a former senior writer for <em>Spin</em> magazine.</p>
<p>Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, organized and hosted by Dr. Andy Jones, occurs on the first and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery. <p>Ruby Ibarra is a 24 year-old Filipina-American rapper and spoken word artist from San Lorenzo, California.</p>
<p>An active poet and musician during her undergraduate years at UC Davis, Ibarra was a member of SickSpits Poetry Collective as well as the UC Davis Slam Poetry team. Influenced by rapper-poets such as Eminem and Tupac Shakur, Ibarra has cultivated her own style, which has been described as reminiscent of classic 90s hip hop.</p>
<p>She has been featured on noted web-based publications such WorldStar Hip Hop (garnering over 200 thousand views), Bossip, and Myx TV, as well as MTV and VH1&#8242;s blogs. For the past year, she has been touring and performing across the U.S., including a performance at “Rock the Bells,” the nation’s largest hip hop festival. She has also been the opening act for musicians such as Blu and Hieroglyphics.</p>

<p>A native of Worcester, Massachusetts, David Rowe was educated at Swarthmore College. His poems have appeared in the <em>Cortland Review, the North American Review, Big Bridge, Dorado, Solid Quarter, Exquisite Corpse, YAWP</em>, and in the anthology <em>The Maple Leaf Rag</em>. A poet accomplished on stage and on the page, David has read his poetry on the Moe Green Poetry Show and on radio station WWOZ, and at countless venues in the United States and abroad.</p>
<p>David helped represent New Orleans when Wave Books’ Poetry Bus Tour (2006) and S.A. Griffin’s Poetry Bomb Tour (2010) came to his hometown, he has served as poet-in-residence at Peter Anderson’s Beauty Shop, and currently he teaches poetry writing at the Covenant House, a shelter for homeless youths. His full-length collection,<em> Unsolicited Poems</em>, is available at <a href="http://www.vernapress.com/" target="_blank">http://www.vernapress.com</a>.</p>

He was the founder and editor at <em>press : today : Niagara</em> and <em>Runciple Spoons</em>, and had worked with and published poets such as d.a. levy, Kenneth Rexroth, Allen Ginsberg, and Jim Morrison. In addition to his literary career, D. R. Wagner is also a singer-songwriter, musician and a visual artist of work that has won international awards and appeared in numerous publications and museum collections. Wagner has taught Design at UC Davis for twenty years.</p>

<p>Simmons Buntin is the author of two books of poetry, <em>Riverfall</em> and <em>Bloom</em>, both published by Ireland&#8217;s Salmon Poetry.<em> Riverfall</em> was published in 2005, and <em>Bloom</em>, his new collection, was published in 2010 and is available now. He has published poetry and prose in a variety of publications, from Japan&#8217;s <em>Kyoto Journal </em>to the leading magazine of culture and place, <em>Orion</em>. He has won an Academy of American Poets Prize, Colorado Artist&#8217;s Fellowship for Poetry, and grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Tucson-Pima Arts Council. Buntin is also the founding editor of <em>Terrain.org: A Journal of the Built &amp; Natural Environments.</em></p>
<p>Dorine Jennette’s essays, poems, and reviews have appeared in journals such as <em>Puerto del Sol, the Journal, Ninth Letter, Coconut, the Los Angeles Review, </em>and the <em>Georgia Review.</em> Her work has also appeared in the anthology,<em> Breathe: 101 Contemporary Odes</em>, by C&amp;R Press. Jennette’s most recent book, <em>Urchin to Follow</em>, was published in 2010 by The National Poetry Review Press. Among her many accomplishments, Jennette has won The National Poetry Review Book Prize, 2008, The Matt Clark Poetry Prize from New Delta Review, 2007, and The Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Poetry Prize for 2005.</p>
<p>Attendees to this <strong>special outdoor edition</strong> of Poetry Night are encouraged to arrive early at Bistro 33 to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, hosted by Andy Jones, occurs on the first Wednesday of the month at Bistro 33 at 8:30 P.M., and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 8 P.M. There is an open microphone segment after the main reading, at 9:30 at Bistro 33 and 9:00 at the John Natsoulas Gallery.</p>
