In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Poetry Night Reading Series, Poetry Night founders Dr. Andy Jones and Brad Henderson will be performing on November 19th at 8 PM at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street in Davis.

Brad Henderson is a poet, writer, drummer, and mechanical engineer. A full-time faculty member at University of California, Davis, Henderson teaches engineering, science, and business writing, as well as a freshman seminar titled The Psychology of Drummers: Rock, Jazz, and Blues. Along with his most recent title, The Blue Devil: Poems, Henderson is also the author of Split Stock (co-authored with Andy Jones), and Drums: a Novel.

Henderson is currently finishing a textbook that examines writing through the lens of mathematics. Sentence Algebra & Document Algorithms will be published by the New York publisher Springer in the spring of 2016. A life-long musician, Henderson has played drums in a variety of rock and blues-rock bands, including The Love Handles, Bruce & the Dinosaurs, and The Jetsons. A descendent of the pioneer Hamel family, Henderson is a fifth-generation Davisite and a third-generation member of the UC Davis faculty.

The Poet Laureate of Davis, Dr. Andy Jones is a faculty member at UC Davis, radio talk show host, public speaker, and essayist. Andy has taught writing, creative writing and literature classes at the University of California, Davis since 1990, and since 2000 has hosted “Dr. Andy’s Poetry and Technology Hour” on radio station KDVS. Among his 1,000 interviewees have been Margaret Atwood, Sherman Alexie, T.C. Boyle, Michael McClure, Ralph Nader, and Gary Snyder.

His publications include poems in many literary journals, essays in The Davis Enterprise and The Sacramento Bee, and the poetry in his books Split Stock and Where’s Jukie? Dr. Andy has two books in manuscript, and is currently working on a Cultural Guide to Davis.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The Poetry Night Reading Series, hosted and produced by Dr. Andy Jones, occurs on the first and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery.

For this special event, refreshments (cookies, cheeses, beverages) will be served just before the open mic. Thanks to the Poetry Night interns for providing this special treat. Please plan to stick around for the celebration!
