Poetry Reading February 20th at the John Natsoulas Gallery:
Francisco X. Alarcón and the Writers of the New Sun

On Thursday, February 20th, at 8 PM at the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street, Davis), the Poetry Night Reading Series is pleased to welcome Francisco X. Alarcón and the Escritores del Nuevo Sol / Writers of the New Sun. In addition to Alarcón, the participants in the Writers of the New Sun include JoAnn Anglin, Paul Aponte, Fausto Avedaño, Nancy Aidé González, Xico González, Graciela Ramírez, Betty Sánchez, and former Poetry night featured poet Arturo Mantecón.

Francisco X. Alarcón is an award-wining Chicano poet and educator and is the author of more than 15 volumes of poetry, including From the Other Side of Night, Body in Flames, and Ce-Uno-One: Poems for the New Sun. He teaches at the University of California, Davis, where he directs the Spanish for Native Speakers Program. Alarcón co-founded the Writers of the New Sun community and also created the Facebook page “Poets Responding to SB 1070.” His awards include the 1984 Chicano Literary Prize, the 1993 PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award, and a Fred Cody Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bay Area Book Reviewers Association in 2002. His book Snake Poems: An Aztec Invocation (1992) won the American Book Award.

Writers of the New Sun is a literary community based in Sacramento that especially honors the literary and artistic cultures and traditions of the Chicano, Latino, Indigenous, and Spanish-language peoples. Members write in Spanish, English, or both. All of its activities are open to the public.

Join us as we celebrate Francisco X. Alarcón, the Writers of the New Sun, and the 20th anniversary of their founding!

The Open Mic will begin around 9 PM and the after-party around 10 PM. You are encouraged to arrive early to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list.

The Poetry Night Reading Series, coordinated and hosted by Andy Jones, and produced by Lane Berger, takes place at the John Natsoulas Gallery on the first and third Thursday of every month.

Poetry Night at the John Natsoulas Gallery is an entirely volunteer-run affair. If you would like to meet some of the volunteers, feel free to come by early to help set up the chairs, or stay after the Open Mic to help us put them away. Enthusiasts are also encouraged to help publicize the Poetry Night Reading Series. Ask us how!
