Amiri Baraka Celebrated at the John Natsoulas Gallery on January 16th at 8 P.M.

Poetry Night!

This coming Thursday, January 16, at 8 PM, at the John Natsoulas Gallery, Dr. Andy Jones will be hosting a celebration of the life and poetry of Amiri Baraka, the African-American beat and jazz poet who passed away last week at the age of 79. Joining me to speak about the former Poet Laureate of New Jersey will be Sacramento poetry all-stars Indigo Moor and Lawrence Dinkins, as well as UC Davis faculty Francisco X. Alarcon (author of 20 books and winner of the American Book Award) and Dr. Vanessa Rapatz, who has taught Baraka’s plays in her English classes.

Baraka came to Davis a number of times, most recently in 2007 to participate in the Jazz Beat Festival, speaking at the John Natsoulas Gallery and the Varsity Theatre. Dr. Andy got to drive Baraka from San Francisco airport to Davis, during which time they became friends and correspondents. At this event we will read his work, talk about his importance as a poet and jazz critic, and celebrate his spirit among friends.

The open mic will begin around 9, and the after-party around 10. Please join us!
