Science Fiction Icon Kim Stanley Robinson reads from his new novel Shaman

Opening for Robinson will be rising SciFi star Andy Stewart

This event takes place at the John Natsoulas Gallery on November 7th at 8 P.M.

Dear Friends of Poetry and Prose,

The Poetry Night Reading Series is pleased to welcome Davis science fiction authors Kim Stanley Robinson and Andy Stewart to read from new work at the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street) on November 7th at 8 P.M.

The multi award-winning science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson will be reading from his new book, Shaman. About this book, Robinson has said this: “[Shaman] has been part of the project all along for me — this science fictional project of what is humanity. What are we? What can we expect to become? How do we use technology? Is there a utopian future possible for us? In all of these questions, it becomes really important [to understand] how we evolved to what we are now and what we were when we were living the life that grew us as human beings in the evolutionary sense.”

Writing for National Public Radio, Alan Cheuse says that “this gorgeous book… — like the best of its kind — gives you a feel for a life we might dream about but will never otherwise know.”

Kim Stanley Robinson is a winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards. He is the author of fifteen previous books, including the bestselling Mars trilogy and the critically acclaimed Fifty Degrees Below, Forty Signs of Rain, The Years of Rice and Salt, and Antarctica–for which he was sent to the Antarctic by the U.S. National Science Foundation as part of their Antarctic Artists and Writers’ Program. He lives in Davis, California.

Robinson will be reading Andy Stewart, the Davis author whose “Wormwood is Also a Star” appeared as the cover story in a recent issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. In addition to writing his well-received fiction, Andy works in Davis as a teacher and associate professor

Starting off the Open Mic at 9 PM Thursday will be a performance by The Spokes, the incredibly talented a cappella group that previously performed immediately after a Poetry Night reading by Sandra Gilbert. They will amaze you with their melodies.
