Dear Friends of Poetry,

The Poetry Night Reading Series is pleased to welcome esteemed poets Alan Williamson and Jeanne Foster. Williamson and Foster will read on Thursday, October 17th at 8 P.M. at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street.

Alan Williamson recently retired from UC Davis and is currently teaching his last graduate poetry workshop. He will continue to teach in the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers, where his students have included James Franco and Joe Wenderoth. Williamson is the author of five books of poetry, most recently The Pattern More Complicated: New and Selected Poems (University of Chicago Press), and five books of criticism, mostly recentlyWesternness: A Meditation (University Press of Virginia). Recent poems have appeared inThe Yale Review, Ploughshares, and Agni, among other magazines. Alan has taught at UC Davis since 1982, and is highly esteemed by students and colleagues.

Jeanne Foster was born in Florida and grew up in New Orleans. A Professor of English Literature and Creative Writing at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California, she divides her time between Berkeley and Le Convertoie, a medieval borgo in Tuscany. She is currently involved in two Italian-centered projects: a memoir of the ballroom dance world in Italy (Her passion is ballroom dancing), and the translation in collaboration with Alan Williamson of selected poems of Bianca Tarozzi, poet and professor at the University of Verona.

Foster’s poems have appeared in Hudson Review, Triquarterly, Ploughshares, Literary Imagination, and many other journals. She is co-editor of Appetite: Food as Metaphor, an anthology of poems by women (BOA). Her critical work A Music of Grace explores the sacred in contemporary American poetry. Her poetry collection A Blessing of Safe Travelwon the Quarterly Review of Literature Poetry Award. Her poetry collection Goodbye, Silver Sister is forthcoming from Northwestern University Press.

Williamson and Foster will begin reading at about 8, with the open mic at 9. Please join us.
